Description:
The first of a series of work made in 1973 addressing violence toward women, this dramatic tableau utilized her own bloodied body as a sculptural element. Mendieta invited fellow students and faculty from the Intermedia workshop to her apartment to see the piece. Upon arrival they discovered her partially nude body tied to a table in a scene that recreated the violent rape-murder of a nursing student as it had been reported in the press.[ p. 155; p. 184; Viso, Olga M.; Ana Mendieta: Earth Body: sculpture and Performance, 1972 - 1985, Washington D.C: Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, 2004 (3775713956 9783775713955)]
